It is partially our fault, that 455,000 people are going hungry in Mozambique, and it is our responsibility to help. High food prices, caused by high oil prices and a global economic slowdown, are still producing hunger in many parts of the world. In Mozambique, they have the double whammy of dealing with a drought, combining to create severe hunger and the threat of starvation.
Why is it our fault? Three reasons.
1. Domestic over consumption, fueled by our housing boom and an S.U.V. orgy, led to greater demand for fossil fuels and higher oil prices.
2. A foreign policy of war by the United States, first with a mis-guided invasion of Iraq, and second with constant threats of war against Iran, caused over speculation in the oil market futures.
3. Food for fuel. And because of high oil prices, farmers in the United States and around the world, stopped growing crops for human consumption – and began growing crops for car consumption.
From Haiti to Burma, and most of Africa in between, the United Nations World Food Programme is struggling to help the hungry. This Holiday Season you can help by donating something to help the people who need it most. Thank You.
